Waste no time: attend the Healthy Harvest Festival at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum

OTTAWA, September 16, 2014 – It takes so much work to grow and reap the harvest that it really would be a shame to let it go to waste.

Yet every year, about 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted around the world. In Canada alone, the value of wasted food exceeds $ 27 billion per year. Although waste occurs throughout the food production and distribution chain, in developed countries a significant portion of food waste takes place in the homes of consumers.

Sponsored for the first time by the Louis Bonduelle Foundation, the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum’s (CAFM) Healthy Harvest Festival, from September 19 to 21, will focus on the problem of food waste, and explore various ways it can be reduced at home.

On Friday evening, the Festival will begin with a talk given by members of Hidden Harvest Ottawa, a group that harvests fruit trees on public and private land in Ottawa to provide food that would otherwise be wasted to local food banks. The talk will be followed by the screening of the award-winning Canadian documentary, Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story, which gives a chilling insight into how much food gets wasted. Tickets are $ 10 and registration is required at cafmuseum.techno-science.ca, Participants will receive a complimentary gift, courtesy of Bernardin Home Canning and have the opportunity to season their own freshly made popcorn.

The documentary will be screened again on Saturday and Sunday, at 1:30 p.m. College and university students showing a valid student ID will be admitted to the Museum FREE to attend the documentary screening thanks to the financial support from the Louis Bonduelle Foundation.

Throughout the week-end, other activities will highlight different ways to cut down on food waste. Whether through workshops learning to make “Garbage Soup”, to clean out the vegetable crispers of items before they go bad, or learning about the role of earthworms and fungi in decomposing wasted food to turn it into useful compost again, there will be fun learning experiences for all ages at the CAFM.
