Holiday Programming – Winter Frolic

Please note that the Museum will be open on Monday, December 26 and Tuesday, December 27 as well as on Monday, January 2 and Tuesday, January 3 during Holiday Programming.

Join us at the Museum this holiday season for a fun exploration of vintage toys and classic games. Try your hand at some old fashioned games, some classic ones and admire and play with some toys from the past. Also, visitors can enjoy our gingerbread house village which will be on display for viewing and judging. Then, for some tasty treats, join us in our demonstration kitchen to bake soft ginger cookies and help make some International seasonal holiday desserts. Don’t forget to stop by our craft corner and try some easy Japanese origami and other various paper crafts. Visit the animals in the barns and check out the other demonstrations being offered!

Cookie Day - Special Activity – December 30th ONLY

Join us to help bake cookies all day long to donate to the Ottawa Mission to celebrate the New Year.

Vintage Toys and Classic Games (ongoing)

Feeling nostalgic? Do you have a favourite childhood toy? Kids and adults alike are invited to admire the many vintage toys on display and get a chance to play with some classic games. Get ready to have some fun as visitors discover and rediscover traditional toys played around the world!

Gingerbread House Village (ongoing)

Making gingerbread houses have become a popular holiday tradition for many families. Visit our gingerbread house village display and vote for your favourite house. Learn about the history of the gingerbread house along the way.

Origami (ongoing)

Origami is the ancient Japanese art of folding paper. Join us to learn a few simple origami techniques. From paper snowflakes to paper cranes, kids and adults alike are invited to participate in creating beautiful origami crafts. Children will also delight in reading our selection of winter themed books.

Lebkuchen – Soft Ginger Cookies (10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.)

There are many variations to this German classic. Discover ours as you join us in the demonstration kitchen and learn how to bake these delicious classic holiday cookies. Discover what ginger is, where it’s from, its history and all the different ways in which it is used.

Pain d’épices (11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.)

This is our take on the French classic “spice bread”. Discover the ingredients used to make this delicious cake, such as ginger, and learn why ginger has been so popular and used for thousands of years.

Eggnog Loaf (12:00 p.m.)

Inspired by the traditional holiday beverage, this eggnog loaf is full of festive flavours and is also easy to prepare. Come and sample this delectable treat.
